May 25, 2011 The Office Of Energy And Sustainability Recently we got an email from a member of the Office of Energy and Sustainability asking us to link their site to ours. I love when we can come together, internet or otherwise, and proceed on to one common goal. So now if you visit our Links page you will see a new link to the Office of Energy and Sustainability‘s site as well as a link for Broadway Bicycle Co. Being the one man web crawler that I am this meant I had to check out their site. I found an interesting page detailing things people can do right now to affect change to help the environment. One item in particular caught my eye: “Walk or bike Transportation accounts for more than 20% of our greenhouse gas emissions. Walking or biking eliminates transportation-related emissions and helps you keep healthy, too! If you must drive, commit to driving as few miles as possible and always keep your car well-maintained (this includes making sure your tires are adequately inflated).” So I hope this is not the last we hear from this office, and I hope we can collaborate in the future. It makes you feel good, and it helps people in need. Well here’s your chance. We got an email in our inbox recently that might peak your mechanical interest. “I am a volunteer with the Diabete’s Associations “Tour de Cure” bike event. I am writing because we are in desperate need of some volunteers for our event. I am specifically looking for people who could help for a few hours with some bike repair on the routes. The ADA has cars, drivers and HAM radio operators, but we still need some people with basic bike mechanic skills. You need to know something pertaining to bicycles, something specific like the proper foot pounds of tension for a freewheel or the proper chain stay length for the use of panniers, but there is just no one you can ask. Sure we can bug the three or four people we know who understand bikes back and forth, but do they really have enough time and energy to field all of these questions? Well you are in lunch luck; man I’m hungry. Introducing a site called Bicycles.Stackexchange.com! This site is part of a larger collection of sites that I will go into later. Essentially it is a Q&A website dedicated to bicycles where you can ask questions and get meaningful answers. The thing that makes this site different from let’s say Yahoo.Answers is that both questions and answers get up and down voted based on usefulness and compliance with the rules of StackExchange. This ensures that good questions and answers float to the top of the list while bad ones sink down. Couple this with a community that cares about giving good meaningful information and you have a recipe for a smart knowledge base for bicycle questions and answers ranging from the difference between full and fingerless gloves to how to properly calculate wheel diameter. Bicycles.Stackexchange.com is just a small part of a much bigger network. In their words: “Stack Exchange is a fast-growing network of 51 question and answer sites on diverse topics from software programming to cooking to photography and gaming. Written by Chris Belsole 1 Comment Filed under Article May 16, 2011 Tour de Parc Our Bicycle Month 2011 community bicycle ride for May 11, 2011 was the “Tour de Parc” planned and led by Claire. We started from two locations, joining up at the Henry Johnson Memorial at Madison and Willet in Washington Park for a quick ride to Christa’s Community Garden plot in Lincoln Park where Christa showed the developing fruits of her labor in her new plot. John then pointed out Beverwyck Creek as it can be heard flowing beneath a utility cover. We next used the Holland Ave. Shared Lanes to cruise over to Ridgefield Park to check out the clay courts, the dirt pile, and our lighting as dusk was fast approaching. By the time we got to Westland Hills Park, dusk had arrived as we rode through the peaceful wooded path for another stop at the kiddy pool re-build project. Leaving Westland Hills, we again crossed a now-calm Washington Ave. soon to arrive at Brevator Park for another stop and explanation of the spray pool. By this time of evening, even Western Ave. was mostly light traffic as we rode on it to Colonial and then down to Buckingham Lake (or Rafts Pond) and Park. At this point, just after 9:00 PM, John headed off to the ‘burbs while Perry, Claire, Christa, and Lorenz circled the pond, cruised though beautiful Albany neighborhoods, and headed back downtown via New Scotland Ave. Even though there was a spring chill in the air, the well-lighted streets of the city combined with many charming neighborhoods made for a relaxing and pleasant ride. Our next ride will be on a completing different theme – the National Ride of Silence to commemorate local riders killed on the road. From the e-mail: “The Town of East Greenbush will be holding a public workshop on May 23rd @ 7pm in the Town Hall to discuss potential ideas for new recreational amenities in the town. Such amenities as park improvements, trails, bike paths and other recreational improvements residents would like to see are being considered for discussion. Honestly I love when people alert us to these kinds of things. We are called Albany Bicycle Coalition, but when we have a chance to help citizens outside of Albany we take it. We could change our names to the Capital Region Bicycle Coalition, but ABC is too good of an acronym to give up.
