Why on earth would I ever want to ride a bicycle into work?????
There are lots of reasons...
Bike to Work – It’s good for employees:
Bike to Work – It’s good for employers:
Bike to Work – It’s good for cities and towns:
Bike to Work – It’s good for the State:
Simple
Save a buck or two.
Get a little exercise.
Do something for the environment.
Cerebral
Remember your first bike?
Remember the freedom it brought you?
It still can.
Creative
“Do something to make your kids proud.” A caption in a picture showing mom or dad cycling to work while their school-aged kids look on - beaming with pride. This is intended to be an ironic twist to putting your child on the bus for the first day of school.
The academic public policy angle…
A window of opportunity is opening for commuting to work by bicycle. This opportunity is developing due to several factors, including: The rising cost of gasoline, Concerns for the environment, The obesity epidemic, Changing employee expectations regarding the quality of life and the loss of young people from our workforce.
A central event is required to effect changes in public policy. Bike to Work Day could be that event.
The morality based appeal…
It is time to set a positive example, create a healthier workforce as well as a cleaner environment for our children as well as for ourselves.
I call for leaders at every level in the Capital District to join in an effort to encourage people to ride their bikes to work during National Bike to Work Day on Friday May 16th 2008.
This event represents an ideal opportunity to demonstrate that private industry can work with various public institutions and that the multiple levels of government can work together to affect some positive change.
The personal appeal
On the other hand, I may be completely wrong. This event may ultimately prove that residents of the capital district are not ready to think of bikes as tools as well as toys and that accommodating infrastructure changes are not warranted.
But I don’t think I am wrong. I think I am just like a lot of other people who see the challenges our future holds and struggles to find something to help gain some control over their lives and, ultimately, our future.
And for that reason, I’m going to try to put this together. I’ve failed in the past. That is the least of my worries. I will continue trying for as long as I go to work in the mornings. And through it all, I intend to enjoy the struggle.
Appeal to greed
There’ll be prizes and giveaways.
The winner:
A gallon of gas? Almost $4
