Also, there is no end to the amount of specialized equipment that will lighten the load or increase your ability to see and be seen.
To start, keep it simple. Do not let yourself become overwhelmed at the amount of choices that are available to you. The best equipment you can buy is the gear you will use. Let your own experience be your first guide.
The three most important factors in riding a bicycle are Safety – Safety –Safety!!!!
- Obey traffic laws.
- Ride on the right
- Stop at Stop Lights and Stop Signs
- Take your place in traffic. Do not ride past a line of waiting motorists.
- Be friendly towards people and people are more likely to be friendly towards you.
Bike and equipment
- Bike
- Make sure your bike is in good working order.
- Be familiar with how your bike works and how to make basic repairs.
- Helmet
- Never ride without a helmet.
- It should fit properly.
- Bike Lock
Packing
- Will you need to take a shower?
- If so, you must consider access to a locker room and shower facilities along with toiletries and a towel.
- Bring in some things beforehand and leave them at your work site if possible.
- Shave at home before you leave.
- Will you need to wear a suit?
- If so, can you bring a couple to work beforehand or leave a suit or two along with a few dress shirts at a local cleaner?
- Backpack
- Shoulder bag/Commuter Bag
- Specialized bags that are made for bikes.
Route planning
- Designated route or self determined.
- Map it out using Google maps.
- Consider the less direct route that has less motor traffic
Practice
- Practice riding your bike to ensure that you can ride the distance comfortably.
- Practice riding with what you will bring.
- Ride to work on a day off when traffic is lighter to become familiar.
- Assess the time it takes to complete the route.
